Toilet Training Regression?

Lego X Pee On Sofa

So, quite a while back X managed to crack toilet training, at least during the day. We are, as all parents are, very happy with this. It meant preschool would have it a bit easier, and it would also save us a few quid too. We knew nights would take a while, but we weren’t worried about that. The process of “Training” meant that going out and about was a bit more difficult to be honest so we were glad it was “done”. When your child has a nappy on you’re reasonably confident that they won’t pee all over the floor in the middle of Tesco!

When X started school, they asked that if any kids were still a little bit unpredictable in that area could the parents put some spare trousers and pants in their P.E. bag. Being the diligent (paranoid) parents that we are, we put a pair in for X. They didn’t actually get used in the whole of his first term! We did pick him up one day in December when he was just wearing his P.E. shorts, but we were told there and then that was because he managed to fall over in a puddle and get his trousers wet. We did feel a little bit strange walking him home with our big coats on, his big coat on, and his little pale legs sticking out of the bottom! I kept waiting for someone to comment on how cruel it was to make him wear shorts… to which I’d want to reply with “It makes it easier to slap his legs when he disrespects me” but I’d probably just be arrested!

However, it would seem we’ve hit a little bit of a regression with the whole toilet thing. At school he’s still been great, no reports from teachers or TAs that he’s stopped going to the toilet etc. (Although, by typing that, I’ve not assured there will be next week!). Even at home we have some really good “Toilet” moments when he’ll just take himself upstairs and come back down proudly proclaiming at the top of his longs he’s had a “Standy uppy wee” or a “Wee and a poo!”… even if we do then usually have to send him all the way back up to wash him hands!

But, we do have to keep a blanket on the sofa as that seems to be one of his weak spots. It would seem when he is watching TV, using the computer, doing “making” [That’s his way of saying Arts and Crafts] or doing a few other things the thought that he’ll miss something, or the glue/paint/etc will not be right when he gets back means he doesn’t bother going! It’s often not a lot to be honest, I think he reckons he can hold it longer, but then a little bit comes out and he admits defeat, goes to the toilet but by then it’s too late and he needs new pants and trousers on. We then get a “Sorry, won’t do it ‘gain!”.

We’re hoping it’s a phase… which to be honest is a saying parents use when we mean “I have no idea how to sort this out… hopefully they’ll stop doing it on their own before we go mad!”. For now, we’ll just keep the blanket on the sofa, ask him if he needs to go every hour… tell him he needs to go every couple of that doesn’t work… and make a big deal when he takes himself off on his own.

Future parents beware, there’s lots of pee, poo and sick, get used to it!
